Looking for a gorgeous campground? If you’ve ever been there you know, the Canmore area boasts some of the most spectacular scenery Alberta has to offer.
Surrounded by high mountain peaks with a thick blanket of trees beneath them and the majestic Bow River winding through it the Canmore area also provides a campground to suit everyones taste.
Just east of town, along the Trans Canada highway are three campgrounds that provide , magnificent camping, stunning views, easy access to the Trans Canada highway and are adjacent to the Bow River, one of the best trout streams anywhere.
Bow Valley Campground
Bow Valley Campground, located approximately 25 km east of Canmore, provides its visitors with a country-club-like feeling. Bow Valley Provincial Park never fails to impress, starting with the winding drive in, with its wide open views of the surrounding mountains and rolling foothhills leading you to the campgroBow River campgroundund location on a treed slope along the Bow River. Offering reservation only sites, Bow Valley Camground offers a nice variety of campsites, some of which are located directly on the Bow River. With paved roads, bike paths, a laundromat and store, this campground offers all of the conveniences of home. A more beautiful Alberta campground you would be hard pressed to find.
Three Sisters Campground
Further up the road, near the town of Dead Man’s Flats, is a small campground of only 36 campsites and limited services. Named Three Sisters Campground due to its location across the road from the three majestic mountain peaks known collectively as the Three Sisters, this campground is tucked into a wooded area sandwiched between the Bow River and the Trans Canada highway.
Given the campground’s location adjacent to the Bow River, outdoor enthusiasts will no doubt want to try their hand at fishing for some Alberta trout as well as several hikes in the immediate area. Being only a few kms from the town of Canmore, popping in for a bite to eat or some shopping may appeal to others.
Bow River Campground
Located about an hour west of Calgary and 1 km east of Canmore is the Bow River Campground. With only 39 sites, this campground also offers limited services but is extremely popular due to its proximity to the outdoor recreation the area has to offer as well as the town of Canmore itself. Wildlife is sure to be seen and the local game wardens will strictly enforce the “clean campsite” rules in order to keep them wild.
