Johnston Canyon Camping – Banff National Park

Located on the Bow Valley Parkway about 25 km west of Banff and 25 km East of Lake Louise is Johnston Canyon campground. This campground is set in a most amazing valley in Canada’s Rocky Mountains and visitors will be treated to 360 degrees of glorious views

Although there are a few campsites that can accommodate larger units, most of the 132 campsites and camping loops are small so tenting or small RV’s are the name of the game at this campground. There are fire pits in each campsite and firewood is included with the purchase of a fire permit.

There are 5 washrooms, 2 complete with showers and one that includes access for the disabled.

The campground is located adjacent to the train tracks so you may hear the rumble of the Canadian Pacific Railway throughout the day and night. Having spent a number of nights here I quickly became accustomed to the sound of the trains and felt a kinship with the first visitors to the area since it was opened up to tourism by the rails.

Located within a short drive from both Banff and Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon campground offers an excellent base from which to explore all this area has to offer. It is also an excellent place to camp should you wish to explore highway 93 which runs from Castle Mountain Junction south to Radium Hotsprings, BC.

Johnston Canyon CampgroundThe campground is across the road from the trailhead to Johnston Canyon where a walkway complete with catwalks that hang from the canyon walls take visitors alongside the creek to a series of waterfalls that are one of the most popular attractions in the area. Staying within close proximity to the Canyon allows visitors to visit the falls either early or late in the day, which means you can easily avoid the crush of visitors the attraction draws almost every day during the Summer months.

The Bow Valley Parkway or highway 1A was the original route through this area when the area was first settled. The parkway takes you through some amazing scenery with several roadside pullouts from which to enjoy a bite to eat or from which to appreciate the abundant wildlife

Whether you’re just passing through or looking for a spectacular place to stay in Canada’s Rocky Mountains, Johnston Canyon campground is sure to be a hit with entire family.
